Who is Eugene Robinson?

Eugene Robinson is a former professional football player in the National Football League who played Safety for the Seattle Seahawks (1985-1995), Green Bay Packers (1996-1997), Atlanta Falcons (1998-1999) and Carolina Panthers (2000). Robinson was born on May 28, 1963 in Hartford, Connecticut and spent his college years at Colgate University. After a stellar college career, Robinson went undrafted to the Seattle Seahawks in 1985, where he would spend 11 seasons with the Seahawks and was selected to the pro bowl twice (1992 and 1993).
In 1995, Robinson signed with the Green Bay Packers, playing along side Brett Favre, as they went on to win Super Bowl XXXI defeating the New England Patriots 35-21. After earning his first Super bowl championship, Robinson and the Packers went back to the Super Bowl to face off against the Denver Broncos, however they lost 31-24. In 1998, Robinson joined the Atlanta Falcons making it back to the Super Bowl for the third year in a row.
After leaving the Falcons, Robinson joined the Carolina Panthers for his last season and retired in 2000. In 16 seasons in the NFL, Robinson finished with 1,415 tackles, 57 Interceptions and 7.5 sacks. Only eleven players exceeded beyond Robinson’s career interceptions, and four of who are in the Hall of Fame–hopefully we will see Mr. Robinson fill in as number five.
Although Robinson’s football career is concluded, he still finds a way to stay connected to the game he loves serving as a color analyst for the Carolina Panthers Radio Network, and a Varsity football coach at Charlotte Christian School in Charlotte, NC.
“Ever since I was a football player I always loved being on camera and I was the go to guy to be interviewed,” said Robinson.
Eugene also took time out of his busy schedule to speak with some of the Mass Communications students at Benedict College a couple of times to share his life long journey as a player and a broadcaster. Also inspiring students about what it takes to make in the sports media industry, particularly females.
“They should discover their voice. If they can discover how they sound and be happy with it, they can do very well,” said Robinson. “You have to know your craft and know the information, giving the listener something intangible that they can chew on. You have to explore your voice and know your craft.”
Robinson’s NFL experience plays a huge role in his broadcasting career because of the information he is able to deliver to his audience based on 25 plus years of football knowledge that he possesses, which is imperative nowadays in the sports industry. On most major sports networks you will see that most analysis are former players because of their ability to break down the game for their audiences. Being a Sports analyst is definitely no walk in the park, as Eugene explained the amount time and effort he puts in to prepare for each game he is calling.
“I watch and break down the film as if I’m playing in a football game. Once I do that, then I get into the opposing teams head seeing what they like to do offensively and defensively,” said Robinson. “Since I’ve done that my whole career, its easy for me to break down film.”
Eugene is so much more than just a former football star, but a mentor to many off the field. Whether its calling a football game or delivering a speech, his energy and passion for the game he loves is carried throughout his bloodstream. It’s very rare that you would catch him without a huge smile on his face and even though you may not see it through the radio broadcast, his vitality spirit is enough to excite many Carolina Panthers fans and others who love the game too.

Ben Gordon Off-Season Analysis

Sixth Sense Fulfillment:
Finishing last season with 11.2 points per game, the Bobcats gained something very valuable in acquiring Ben Gordon last season. Gordon can very well make the case of being this years sixth man of the year. He could provide instant-offense off the bench, becoming a primary option when the Bobcats need a big score. This is definitely a natural position that Gordon will be familiar with and could easily adapt to.  After being selected by the Bulls with the third overall pick in the 2004 draft, Gordon became the first rookie in league history to win sixth man of the year honors--averaging 15.1 ppg. Last season Gordon posted five games of 25 Points or more as a reserve, which is tied for third most in the NBA by a player coming off the bench. Also scoring a season-high 34 points on Nov. 9 at New Orleans, setting a Bobcats franchise record for points in a game by a reserve.

Breaking 10,000:
Despite a over time loss to the Portland Trailblazers, December 3rd would be a memorable night for Gordon. Scoring a game-high 29 points that night would put Gordon over the 10,000 point mark of his career. He scored 27 of his 29 points in the second half and over time, also setting a franchise record for 3-pointers in the second half (7). That would make Gordon the sixth University of Connecticut player to reach the 10,000-point mark in the NBA. Will Kemba Walker be the seventh?

No place like home:
On the court, most fans would see 200 pounds of prestigious talent, but Ben Gordon is simply much more than that. During every off-season, Gordon spends a lot of his spare time back in his hometown in Mount Vernon, New York giving back to his community. Gordon, along with Mayor Ernest Davis and the City of Mount Vernon, developed a program where the people of the community could enjoy a week of sports enrichment and community engagement. For the past 8 years, Ben Gordon has hosted his annual Ben Gordon Day as a way to give back to his community and neighbors. This event included live music, vending opportunities and basketball clinics. Approximately 60 of the top high school players in the tri-state area were invited to his alma mater, where he could teach the younger kids in the area.
Let it fly! :
During a six game stretch last year from Nov. 24-Dec. 5, Gordon went on to set  franchise records for three-point filed goals in a game, half and quarter. He posted records of eight three-point field goals in a game and seven three-point field goals in a half on Dec. 3 against the Portland Trailblazers. Also he set the franchise record for three-point field goals in a quarter while tying the franchise record with seven three-point field goals in the game.

With a new and improved look for the Bobcats, there should be no surprise that Gordon will have significant numbers this season, especially from the the three-point range. Even nights when his shot may not fall, Gordon could still space the floor to hit high percentage shots because of the dribble-penetration abilities that guards Ramon Sessions and Kemba Walker possesses. He is amongst one of the best consistent shooters in the NBA, averaging a shooting percentage of 43 percent and 40 percent from the three-point range. You want to open up the middle for Al Jefferson, right? This would be a perfect vindication for that scenario.

Leadership factor:
Some intangibles like leadership, chemistry and motivation are often underestimated for a teams recipe to success. The Bobcats are a young team in the rebuilding process and have attained potential future stars in key spots, but the pivotal factor is leadership. Along with Al Jefferson and Kemba Walker, Gordon could surely add to the leadership and teachings to this years team behind nine years of experiences in the league of his own.

This is not the first time Gordon has been apart of a rebuilding project, as he was apart of young teams like the Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons. Going back in his younger days with the Connecticut Huskies and Chicago Bulls, Gordon is a born leader. In Gordon's final year in college leading his team in scoring (20.5),  he led the Huskies to the NCAA Championship. Following being drafted, he also assisted the Bulls to the playoffs in his rookie season after a six year skirmish. Great basketball skills are good for winning teams, however great leadership is how you win championships and Gordon will provide that for the Bobcats.

Johnny Manziel's off-season activities

The 2012 Heisman trophy winner Johnny Manziel makes headlines once again after being tossed out of a University of Texas fraternity party. I believe this decision was not a smart move by Manziel because of what trouble that could have cost him. This action of Manziel could show flashes of arrogance that could lead to trouble situations in the future. Of course this is no surprise that he was tossed out because this is a school that does accept you and he should have known that. Do you think Michael Jordan's presence would be allowed at Duke? Do you think Derek Jeter is safe at a Boston bar? Do you think Clemson would open their arms with joy to Jadeveon Clowney? Get my point? I believe Manziel was lucky enough to walk out of that frat party with no real altercation escalating into the Heisman trophy winner getting seriously injured.

Johnny Manziel had a remarkable 2012 season completing 68% of his passing for over 3500 yards, rushing for over 1400 yards, and totaled with 47 touchdowns. Manziel had an overachieving season due to the expectations of a young 19 year old Quarterback in his first starts. He was able to lead Texas A&M to an 11-2 season, including defeating the 2013 National champs Alabama Crimson Tide. No one expected this kid to do this well in his first college career starts and very few knew who he was, unless you were a Texas A&M fan. Now that we do and seen what he can accomplish, Johnny must understand that his brand perception is very important.

Winning the Heisman memorial trophy is more than just holding up a piece of heavy metal. It recognizes the outstanding college football player where performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. Winners epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work. The trust, furthermore, has a charitable mission to support amateur athletes and to provide greater opportunities to the youth of our country. The trustees, who all are guided by a devotion to college football and are committed to community service and the valued tradition which the trophy represents. As a Heisman trophy winner you are a representation of a winning, hard work, leadership, and greatness for that year. You are entrusted in a brotherhood to join previous players who all accomplished the same achievements in their respected years. Not only are you portrayed for that year but you are invited every year to the Heisman trophy ceremony to celebrate your accomplishments and the new inductee for that year. In other words, your achievements are an illustration for of what the Heisman trustees represent for life. With all of this being said, Manziel must understand that he has become an appearance for the Brand of what the Heisman memorial trophy epitomizes for. Anyone that is portrayed to tarnish that brand would be immediately expunged from their records, just like 2005 Heisman winner Reggie Bush.

I do understand that Johnny has not committed any serious crime in late news but it does not mean they are ok either. Would these past situations hurt his draft stocks? The answer is No, but that does not exclude the fact teams are paying attention to his every move. Teams will evaluate that on the field Manziel is a very talented player, but would be more concern about his off-the-field activities. Will he spend time studying film or living life to the fullest? Will he spend his free time preparing to get better? Will he be a great role model, leader, and representation to the organization? These are some questions teams will take in consideration whether they feel they will get their money’s worth or not.

I believe teams are concern that maybe this kid just can't stay out of the limelight lifestyle and will become a distraction to their team. Teams are evaluating these college players even more now because they are afraid to run into another Aaron Hernandez case. They want to know more than just a prospects on-the-field ability but to see if they are worth the investment to their business. Will it start as getting thrown out of a party and end with Manziel being a part of a deadly shootout? We don't know where these small problems could potentially lead to but some organizations are not going to wait to find out the end result either. Teams are just looking out for the best interest of their team, their fans, and most of their entire brand. For all we know, for the best interest of NFL teams and Johnny's family it will be best to attack the small issues now. Just think of it as catching a deadly disease in particular part of the body before it spreads.

Now here is where I have to defend Johnny Manziel from all of the criticism against his actions. Let's not forget that Johnny is only 20 years old. What does that mean? This is a young man who has obtained celebrity life status in just his first two years as a college football player. There were some players that could handle that lifestyle like Cam Newton and Tim Tebow but Manziel is neither of those guys. I'm pretty sure the limelight lifestyle has its temptations especially in the collegiate level. Johnny is just a young man just enjoying the attention that he worked hard for with his great ability to play football. Maturity comes with experience, not age. It also comes from the quality of decisions that we make and have to learn from as we travel this road of longevity. There is a problem if Manziel's off-season actions have any affect against his ability to play football, but if not I believe he will be just fine.

Potential candidate teams for Seth Curry

Duke star Seth Curry went undrafted and will now be hoping to land a spot on NBA team roster this year. Honestly I believe teams are making a huge mistake by passing up on this guy and will regret it very soon. Curry suffered a tough shin injury that resulted in him having surgery at the end of season which caused him to miss NBA team workouts. I guess many teams felt drafting the Duke star would be a bit risky at this time and believe that Curry is a very talented player to a certain extent. Curry is a bit under sized at 6'2" for a shooting guard position and lacks the athleticism ability that most NBA guards he will face possess. At his size he would be forced to transition himself into a point guard just like his older brother Stephen Curry. The only problem with that is averaging only 1.5 assist in his last year means teams believe he lacks the court vision of a point guard. I can agree with scouting report but one thing they also forgot to add is that this kid could shoot the lights out of a gym. In his last year Curry averaged 17.5 ppg with a career high shooting pectange of .438 from the floor and three-point line. That's a pretty good stat line wouldn't you agree? Let's also not forget that this a player who played for one of the greatest coaches of all-time, Mike Krzyzewski. It is definitely not easy to receive a spot on Coach K's roster and to play under the pressure that this program possess. Of course Seth does not acquire the exact skill set that his older bother does, but he can definitely become a lethal weapon on the offensive end as a shooter just like his father Dell Curry. Now I'm saying he will become an instant star just like his brother but he could be a very helpful scorer for these teams below.

Golden State Warriors
The Warriors are a young and upcoming team ready to take on the quest of a NBA Championship with a key addition to their roster, Andre Iguodala. Nothing probably would make Stephen Curry more happy then to play along side his younger brother. Also it would definitely benefit the Warriors as team to obtain another scoring guard to help after losing back up point guard Jarret Jack. Of course Seth would have to play point guard but with the nurturing of his older brother and Head Coach Mark Jackson could definitely help him emerge as a point guard. Remember Stephen did not bear the skills of a point guard in his years at Davidson but learned to develop as one once he began his career in the NBA. In the Warriors up tempo system Seth Curry could develop as a key player to hit open shots and score in transition. Stephen has been campaigning for teams to sign his younger brother on his twitter page. With Curry emerging as the star for the Warriors, he could very well be the leading voice for the organization to give his brother the opportunity to be sign.

Miami Heat
The Heat would seem to not need much help after winning their second championship in a row but  they are in serious need of some more help if they are looking to achieve a three-peat. Miami recently were forced to use their amnesty clause on shooting guard Mike Miller a few weeks ago which without a doubt decreases the Heat's three-point shooting percentage. Miller's $6.2 million salary for 2013-14 will save the Heat more than $16 million in luxury tax payments under the new, more punitive tax rate that kicks in next season. With teams becoming more apparent in the league this year, Miami will definitely need to look into improving such as replacing Miller's presence. As of now Miami seems to be on the right track of getting better in their post game pursuing to sign Center Greg Oden. This would definitely be a great opportunity for Seth Curry to become that replacement for Miller at a much more affordable salary. Also it would be perfect for the convenience of Curry to be mentored by future Hall-of-Famer Ray Allen. He his under sized to play Allen's position but with a team such as Miami, defense is not stressed upon the shooting guard so much. We all know Miller and Allen are not the best defenders on the team but their lack of defense were substituted for great shots. When teams face off against the Heat, it's usually LeBron James and Dwyane Wade's ultimate duty to guard the best players of the opposing team. Just like Miller and Allen's role, the focus for Curry would be to position yourself in ready position to hit open buckets and score in transition. We should all know that is something he will do as the pure shooter he is.

Charlotte Bobcats
Honestly this would be the superb opportunity for Seth Curry to sign with his hometown team the Charlotte Bobcats, and soon to be Hornets. With Charlotte going back to the Hornets, Seth would have the chance to wear his father's #30 jersey in a Hornets uniform just as he once did in his NBA career. Nothing would make a father more proud than to watch his younger son carry on his Charlotte Hornet's legacy in this generation. With Dell Curry working as the Bobcats broadcaster he would have a opportunity to watch and call his son's games. During Dell's career as a Hornet he averaged 13.8 points per game with a .39 three-point shooting percentage and was able to obtain the sixth man award in the 1988-89 season. Seth has the potential to mirror his father's statistics and achievements as a player especially with a team that is in need of desperate help. Charlotte is definitely in need of desperate scoring after ranking 26th as a team in points per game shooting only .334 percent from beyond the ark. Curry definitely could provide Charlotte with an ability they have lack for years and that's a pure shooter. It seems as if the opportunity to become that lethal weapon is destined for a player like him to not only carry his father's legacy but to become Charlotte's hometown hero.

Dwight Howard to the Houston Rockets

Dwight Howard made his decision to take his talents down to Houston to play along side James Harden and under Head Coach Kevin Mchale. Howard believe that he has a better chance in winning a championship in Houston than the hollywood city Los Angeles Lakers. The Houston Rockets are in the rebuilding stages with their team signing Kevin McHale as their coach, signing former sixth man of the year James Harden, and now Dwight Howard. They were able to squeeze in the playoffs this past season but were bumped out by Harden's former team and Westbrookless Oklahoma City Thunder. I do applaud the Rockets on a good season and making the playoffs. There is a future for this team but Howard's decision could be good and bad for his career.

Why Bad? First off Howard is not as healthy as he should be after receiving back surgery and playing with two injured shoulders. Dwight's career has taken a turn due to these injuries and its only going to get worst. He was once the most dominant center in the NBA but as years progressed for Howard's career, teams have found a way to slow him down by simply hacking and bumping him every time he touches the ball. This is able to happen because he likes to bring the ball down and power up for a hard slam or lay-up. With so much momentum that Howard brings, a hard hack could cause damage to one's body. Could you imagine the amount of damage this guy takes 82 games a season plus the post-season? Teams plan these attacks in their game-plan against Howard, not to injure him but to make him shoot free-throws. Howard shoots 57% from the charity line so giving him a hard foul is not going to hurt the team too much. Here's my point! Let's be honest! The addition of adding Howard is not going to guarantee the Rockets championship hopes in one year. I could be wrong but I am sticking with my prediction because of the lack of a championship supporting cast. This means the Rockets will be looking to grow into a championship team in the west maybe in the next 2-3 years. Maybe sooner than that but I'm sticking with my prediction because this team is too young and inexperienced. There are thirteen players on that roster that under the age twenty-five. Plus we don't know if Howard will like McHale's system. We don't know if Harden and Howard will like to play with each other yet. With the Rockets in the rebuilding process how would we know if Howard's body will be able to take much more of the brutal attacks over the next couple of years. Whose to say Howard will make it to the promise land with this team? Now I'm not putting any kind of bad luck on this guy but if Howard does not improve in his free throw percentage, the result could be him sustaining more injury problems.

My second point is the decision itself to play with James Harden over Kobe Bryant. It's insane!Leaving 30 million dollars on the table is crazy but leaving Kobe Bryant is just insanity. Now I'm not trying to disrespect James Harden in anyway as a player. But I am a guy that judges based on what I've viewed with my eyes on each team and player. Just a year ago I seen James Harden play a huge role in a dynamic trio with Westbrook and Durant but I also saw Harden become ghost in his scoring ability in the finals against the Miami Heat. Some fans believe the presence of Harden played as a huge factor in the result of OKC losing to the Miami Heat that year. This past season Harden had a remarkable year scoring a career-high 25.9 points per game shooting 43% from the floor carrying the load of a young team as a true star. At 23 years old James Harden is a star and will only continue to grow into an even more star as the years progress in his career. But let's be serious sports fans it's Kobe Bryant! Five time NBA Champion! He's won 5 out of his 7 NBA finals series in his career. If there is one man that can lead Howard to promise land that would be Kobe Bryant. Yes he is 34 years old and did suffer an Achilles injury just before the playoffs but one thing about Kobe he is a competitor. Bryant has played through injuries throughout his whole career but never let that blur his vision of winning a championship. This past season we saw a seasoned guard still carry his team and finished top five in points per game along with players younger than him. My point is we do not know what kind of outcome the Lakers may have had if Kobe was healthy. As a fan of the game I do understand that the team that plays the best going into the playoffs is usually the team that achieves it all. I honestly believe that could have been the Lakers this season. Yes this team struggled throughout the season transitioning with a new coach and injuries but the Lakers had a strong finish. They were able to win their last seven out of nine games along with a 34 year old Bryant averaging 29.2 points per game before sustaining his injury. Howard could have came back for another season to give this team another title run, hopefully one with less injury problems. Kobe Bryant can be a little off the charts with his competiveness but he has five championship rings to go along with that attitude. We will never know what would of happened but I do know that Kobe is making plans to return and will make this next season count after an embarrassing past season in his eyes. One thing we can say about the Mamba is that when this guy means business, you better be prepared to deliver the ties for this guy.

My third point is the effects of Pau Gasol's presence to Dwight Howard's game. Playing along side Pau Gasol is a big man's dream and blessing in disguise. Gasol is probably the second best skillful seven footer in the NBA because of his ability to see the floor very well and deliver great passes. He also obtains a tremendous mid-range shooting ability that could draw defenders out to him which could result less attention to Howard. Without Pau Gasol, the offense drops by a fair amount which seems normal considering he's one of the best passing big men in the league and his ability to hit a mid range shots are important. What makes Gasol so special is that he is what you would call a "big guard" so close to the basket creating scoring opportunities for big men like Howard and former Laker Andrew Bynum. Not only will this attract less attention to Howard but could properly assist him from being "hacked" many times in the paint. Less "hacks" equal to a healthy Howard which equals to a long NBA career.

Now let's ease the tension in the air down a little bit and discuss why this would be a possible good move for Howard. The Lakers organization and fans could be a difficult environment for one player to play for because of so much demanded expectations to do nothing else but win championships. This is a organization that will not just settle for making the playoffs or 'almost had a chance' opportunities. It takes players such as Bryant to have that strong desire to win it all and never settle for less. To be honest Dwight doesn't bear that amount hunger to the game and would probably settle for being an entertainer for fans. Playing under a organization with that much expectations could have been too much on the heart of Howard. Maybe Kobe's competitive spirit was too much too handle for the next three years in a Laker uniform. There is probably more to the story than we know behind the scenes of this organization in the past year.

One thing I must agree on with Howard's decision is that Mike D'antoni's system was not the right fit for this guy at all. Lakers owner Jim Buss knows himself that this Laker team was not built to fit D'antoni's system but rather legendary head coach Phil Jackson's triangle offense. Buss hiring Mike was one of his egoistical ways of trying to prove to Phil he could win championships without him. Honestly I believe Jim Buss is a egoistical idiot who will only continue to suffer if he allows his cockiness to get in the way of his business.

Dwight wants to become 'THE' star on a small market team with less demands and expectations than the Lakers. Houston will be a great fit for him emotionally because we are not looking for Houston to show up in the finals any time soon. In reality, with teams like the Miami Heat evolving every year Dwight needs to be apart of a championship caliber team that's ready to win now. Not later, not next season, not three years from now but RIGHT NOW! The new way teams are forming their franchise are built to dethroned the Miami Heat's big three trio. Meaning superstars are teaming up with each other to win championships right away. Superstars are sacrificing pay cuts and their statistics to achieve that ultimate goal. I know that is something Howard does not want to do but it will be something that must be done. I could be over analyzing this mans decision because maybe he's planning to attract some company behind his arrival. Its very possible but I just hope that Howard has made his final decision to stay committed with a team to finally win his first title.

Bobcats off to "Fresh" new start!

The Charlotte Bobcats will be entering their 10th season since joining the league as an expansion team in 2004 after their previous team, the Charlotte Hornets, relocated to New Orleans. Since entering the league the Bobcats obtained a record of 250-476 with a .346 win percentage record, including making NBA history with the worst winning percentage last year. The Bobcats only made the playoffs once in the 2009-2010 season that resulted in their championship hopes getting swept away in the first round by the Orlando Magics. The Bobcats had it all that season! Making the playoffs for the first time in team history, having a player make the all star team (Gerald Wallace), had the best home record, was the best defensive team in the NBA, and finished with a franchise record of wins (43). They almost looked as if they were ready to push the bar of success even higher with this team. Charlotte set expectations on returning back to the playoffs next season but weren't able to do so because of the departure of many players and firing legendary head coach Larry Brown. Since then the Bobcats have been struggling year after year on becoming playoff contenders once again. But with all the struggles I strongly believe that Charlotte is on the right track of getting out this slump of losing and become a playoff contender team once again. How?

Well we all know this team finished off with one the worst NBA seasons of all time by any team just a year ago. But after only winning seven games last year, Charlotte was able to triple those wins this past season. Not only that but we could be seeing the emergence of a young great dynamic duo in Gerald Henderson and Kemba Walker. After only beginning his first 47 games averaging 13.2 points per game, Gerald Henderson finished his last 23 games averaging 24.3 points on .476 shooting and .858 free throw shooting. Also he scored in double figures in those 23 straight games which was the longest streak by a Bobcats player since the "Captain Jack" Stephen Jackson days. Kemba Walker lead the Bobcats in scoring, assists, and steals in 34.8 minutes per game. Walker also went on to set a franchise record for steals in a season (158) and ranked fifth in the NBA in steals. Need I remind you that this a true leader who lead his collegiate team to victory throughout the NCAA tournament and he is only in his third year coming up this season. With statistics like that he could well be on his way in the talks about being one of the top guards of the league.

Although Charlotte finished this season 21-61, you would have to take in consideration that this a team that was bit with the Injury bug very hard after losing Brendan Haywood, Ramon Sessions, DeSagana Diop, and Byron Mullens to tough injures that each player could not recover from effectively. With these players down of course being ranked 27th in rebounds, 29th in assist, 29th points allowed, and 26th in points per game last season was not a surprise. But new addition Josh McRoberts definitely helped to try to cure that problem last season. McRoberts is what you would call a "Big Point Guard." His IQ for the game of basketball is just amazing and he could definitely be a strong player for Charlotte next season on the boards, assist, and scoring. Hopefully Bismack Biyombo will take a page out this guys "Duke basketball" book.

Moving forward and not looking back! Charlotte plans to end their long, struggling, and depressing relationship tides with the name "Bobcats" and plan to make things right again with their first love the Hornets. After New Orleans decided to switch their names to the Pelicans, owner Michael Jordan reacted very quickly in bringing the name "Hornets" back to their birth place, the queen city! After experiencing the 2009-2010 playoff contendor Bobcats, it's obvious there are TRUE NBA fans in Charlotte who will support this team only if they give this city something to cheer about. Also alot of fans were not happy about the "Hornets" name being snatched away to New Orleans forcing Charlotte to search for a new indentity for their city. During the early years of the Hornets, Charlotte was able to set many attendance records that brought alot of support for this team and great revenue. The intentions of Jordan is to bring those fans back into Time Warner Cable Arena.

Along with the name transformation, the soon to be Hornets decided to fire first year head coach Mike Dunlap and brought in former assistant coach for the Lakers Steve Clifford. Along with Clifford Charlotte was able to bring in New York Knicks legend Patrick Ewing. Now I wasn't too happy after Dunlap was fired because I believed that he didn't recieve a fair chance to prove himself worthy enough to build a NBA team. But the fact that some of the players didn't like him and the emergence of NBA talents is growing tremendously, the bobcats felt accomplishing their goals would be difficult with Dunlap as head coach. But I believe Clifford and Ewing are probably going to be a "blessing in disguise" for Charlotte because of the experience these two coaches have of coaching great talented playoff teams. Also together these two helped a Stan Van Gundy Orlando Magics team reach the NBA Finals in 2009 and both helped developed a 7'0" #1 draft pick into a phenomenal Superstar. Not only will these guys be well respected by the Charlotte players but they will also bring improvement for Charlotte's struggling big men in rebounding and defense.

The fnal topic I want to touch on about Charlotte are about some free agency decisions that will fit perfect for the future Hornets. First off the Bobcats have $20 millions-plus under next season's cap, how do they put that to use? Well the decision of Ben Gordon deciding to opt-in to return to the Bobcats for one more year is just fantastic because it adds a great shooter in the perimeter to whoever Charlotte decides to sign. This could be a great year for the former Chicago Bulls star simply because of the firing of head coach Mike Dunalp. Gordon did not get along very well with Dunlap and did not recieve alot of play time minutes because of that issue. Gordon felt like he was hindered into becoming the prolific scorer he once was in the early years of his career in Chicago. I believe alot of the players did not like Dunlap because he was a collegiate coach and that cause many players not to respect him as a NBA head coach. I'm not saying Charlotte will sign NBA All-Stars like Chris Paul and Dwight Howard because of their intentions of Championship hopes now but they could go for some quality players that could push their team to #8 seed playoff hopes. Players such as Monta Ellis, O.J. Mayo, David West, Paul Millsap, Al Jefferson, or J.J. Hickson. Yes Charlotte is not a huge media market such as New York, LA, or Chicago but they could offer some good deals. Charlotte could deliver a marginal talent $40 million dollars and they would also receive excessive love from a city in desperate need of help giving the opportunity for any player to become a city's hero. No it's not going to turn this franchise around in one year but it will start the beginning of a strong young franchise that will be ready to push the bar of SUCCESS!

Game 7 (My view points on the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs)

What a NBA Finals series! What a Game! Hands down that NBA finals series should go down in history as one of the best NBA Finals series of all time. It was dramatic, exciting, marvelous, astounding, extraordinary, stupendous, or any other word you would like to use to describe just flat out AMAZING! First off, I want to congratulate the Miami Heat on winning their second straight NBA championship in a row. Those group of guys played like warriors, men, and most of all Champs. They did a fantastic job forcing a game 7 with their backs against the wall and dodging the bullet of humiliation. I used the word "Humiliation" because this is a Spurs team that was suppose to be "Seasoned" for the quick Miami Heat. I refused to use the term old because I picture that word as someone or something that can no longer do the things that it once could do. It's obvious the Spurs could still play and compete like the champions they are at high level to give the best team in the NBA a lot of struggles.

LeBron James performance last night was just stunning and magnificent. Over the years, we criticized James about his lack of accurate shooting consistency--especially in the fourth quarter. But James laid that to rest last night with a 37 points and 12 rebound performance, shooting 52% from the floor along with a clutch two pointer that sealed the victory for the Heat. After talking with some of my colleagues, they brought some good points to my attention about the word clutch and some feel LeBron just isn't up to that level just yet. I will explain more later in my next blog relax Heat fans. Don't forget about the side kick and Miami hero Dwayne Wade. He also had a great game scoring 23 points shooting 52% from the floor also. Last year, it was Mike Miller but this year it was Mr. Shane Battier who wore the hot hand last night to push the heat to victory. But we all know none of this would have been possible if it wasn't for "The shot" in game six by the future hall-of-famer Ray Allen. Be honest! Its over now and the Miami Heat are back-to-back champs.

Alright enough about the game! We all saw what happened last night and now I have some issue that I would like to get off my chest. Yes I was one of the guys who chose the Spurs over the Heat to win Game 6 just the way it was opening up to be but the Spurs simply ran out of gas. I have some points I would like to touch on about the Spurs and Heat below.

The absence of Danny Green:
First off Congratulations to the formal Tar heel Danny Green on achieving an impressive individual achievement on breaking the record for most three pointers scored in NBA finals history. But where was the hot hand last night? One-for-12? Not cool Danny! Now I'm not saying the result of the Spurs losing falls on this guys effort but your presence was missed last night. The Spurs needed that hot hand last night to lift up their championship hopes but Green wasn't able to get much good shots off in game six or seven. It's like the Miami Heat just said, "We are tired of this guy," and simply keyed in on his game. The problem with Green right now is that he only wears one identity and that's to shoot three pointers. The Spurs either live by his shooting ability or die by his shooting. But I can definitely tell you that this guy is going to become a huge threat in this league for many years to come. This Finals experience is going to make Green much better. smarter, and stronger. Stronger physically and emotionally! Watch out for this guy.

The affects of playing more role players
Well we all know the Spurs played gave most of their energy all in game 6 with no sights of seeing a game 7. They felt like if they had gave everything they had they would have put Miami down but that wasn't the case thanks to a clutch shot by Ray Allen. We also knew that after less than 48 hours after a hard fought game six battle San Antonio's energy would descent because of their seasoned age. Knowing these entities about the decline energy of this team should have sparked an idea to kind of hand off some minutes to fresh players on the bench to further assist the big three. I just think Coach Greg Popovich should have went deeper in rotation to give players like DeJuan Blair and Tracy McGrady a chance. Now I know your thinking "Why Blair and another seasoned player McGrady?" Well these are two players who are very skillful in their own ways in the game. Blair may not be as tall as Duncan or Splitter but he could definitely bang on players and crash the boards. Blair, who averages 5.8 rebounds per game, definitely could have helped a struggling Splitter who only had two points and zero rebounds in four minutes. McGrady is another guy who was once the leader of his own team but has been dealing with a lot of injuries throughout his career that kind of hindered his career but the man can still play. I believe he still possesses a fantastic IQ for the game and could still play. Not at the high level he once played in Houston be could have helped with scoring, assist, and some good defensive. My thing is what more damage could have Tracy McGrady done if Green was already struggling one-for-12 from the floor. We don't know if McGrady would have stunk up the court even more or ball out and score an outstanding 18 points to help lift the Spurs. There could be more to the story than I know of about why those guys are not playing. But I just think Tracy must possess something the Spurs love because out of all players to chose from to join an elite team such as the Spurs, they chose McGrady to be apart of their organization to replace Stephen Jackson. I just couldn't understand why you would release Stephen Jackson and bring in another player to replace and don't even play him. I just can't understand that at all. Now I'm not saying these two would have dramatically helped the Spurs win but they could have deferred the seasoned three play time minutes so they could have gain enough energy to get the job done.

Could the Miami Heat go for a three peat?
In my view the chances of the Heat completing a three-peat would probably be a 45% chance they would. Why only 45%? Well you have to understand that this was the year of dramatic injuries to key players on some good caliber playoff teams. Meaning there were a lot of "what if" in this years playoff series. What if Kobe Bryant was healthy, would the Lakers have continued their hot streak run? What if Derrick Rose would have played this season? What if Russell Westbrook was healthy? What if David Lee was healthy? What if Danny Granger was healthy? Of course these are questions that will never be answered because its in the past and the Miami Heat are champions. But take in consideration that all of these players I named will return to their respected teams and will be targeting the expectations of dethroning the Heat. Winning back-to-back championships just added a double target on the Heat and they are definitely not getting any younger. Not saying they are "seasoned" like the Spurs but the shooting saviors for Miami are getting older. Another year for Miller, Battier, and Allen could toughen up their chances for another title if they cannot perform to up most ability.
