Eugene Robinson is a former professional football player in the National Football League who played Safety for the Seattle Seahawks (1985-1995), Green Bay Packers (1996-1997), Atlanta Falcons (1998-1999) and Carolina Panthers (2000). Robinson was born on May 28, 1963 in Hartford, Connecticut and spent his college years at Colgate University. After a stellar college career, Robinson went undrafted to the Seattle Seahawks in 1985, where he would spend 11 seasons with the Seahawks and was selected to the pro bowl twice (1992 and 1993).
In 1995, Robinson signed with the Green Bay Packers, playing along side Brett Favre, as they went on to win Super Bowl XXXI defeating the New England Patriots 35-21. After earning his first Super bowl championship, Robinson and the Packers went back to the Super Bowl to face off against the Denver Broncos, however they lost 31-24. In 1998, Robinson joined the Atlanta Falcons making it back to the Super Bowl for the third year in a row.
After leaving the Falcons, Robinson joined the Carolina Panthers for his last season and retired in 2000. In 16 seasons in the NFL, Robinson finished with 1,415 tackles, 57 Interceptions and 7.5 sacks. Only eleven players exceeded beyond Robinson’s career interceptions, and four of who are in the Hall of Fame–hopefully we will see Mr. Robinson fill in as number five.
Although Robinson’s football career is concluded, he still finds a way to stay connected to the game he loves serving as a color analyst for the Carolina Panthers Radio Network, and a Varsity football coach at Charlotte Christian School in Charlotte, NC.
“Ever since I was a football player I always loved being on camera and I was the go to guy to be interviewed,” said Robinson.
Eugene also took time out of his busy schedule to speak with some of the Mass Communications students at Benedict College a couple of times to share his life long journey as a player and a broadcaster. Also inspiring students about what it takes to make in the sports media industry, particularly females.
“They should discover their voice. If they can discover how they sound and be happy with it, they can do very well,” said Robinson. “You have to know your craft and know the information, giving the listener something intangible that they can chew on. You have to explore your voice and know your craft.”
Robinson’s NFL experience plays a huge role in his broadcasting career because of the information he is able to deliver to his audience based on 25 plus years of football knowledge that he possesses, which is imperative nowadays in the sports industry. On most major sports networks you will see that most analysis are former players because of their ability to break down the game for their audiences. Being a Sports analyst is definitely no walk in the park, as Eugene explained the amount time and effort he puts in to prepare for each game he is calling.
“I watch and break down the film as if I’m playing in a football game. Once I do that, then I get into the opposing teams head seeing what they like to do offensively and defensively,” said Robinson. “Since I’ve done that my whole career, its easy for me to break down film.”
Eugene is so much more than just a former football star, but a mentor to many off the field. Whether its calling a football game or delivering a speech, his energy and passion for the game he loves is carried throughout his bloodstream. It’s very rare that you would catch him without a huge smile on his face and even though you may not see it through the radio broadcast, his vitality spirit is enough to excite many Carolina Panthers fans and others who love the game too.
